| Why would you seek the services of a psychologist instead of someone calling himself a “therapist” or some other designation?
Psychology is a regulated profession, just as physicians and lawyers are regulated, and this is protection for you because there is a governing body responsible for ensuring ethical standards, such as confidentiality, are maintained by practitioners. Appropriate training is also defined.
The description of “Psychologist" is governed by law and can be used only if one is registered with the Nova Scotia
Board of Examiners in Psychology (NSBEP).
The NSBEP regulates the profession under the Psychologists’ Act of Nova Scotia. To become registered in the province, individuals must possess a doctoral or master's degree approved by the Board, have specified, supervised work experience, and passed both a written and oral examination.
The NSBEP has the power to investigate complaints against Psychologists and to reprimand, suspend, or cancel registration for unprofessional conduct, incompetence, or failure to comply with the legislation
Insurance companies usually reimburse only those fees paid to psychologists. Check with your insurer before seeing anyone other than a pratitioner registered with the NSBEP
